35 euros fee from car hire co to forward my details for a fine!

This scam from the car hire companies is a new one on me and is cynically cashing in on the misfortune of their customers.

Got a letter from Avis/Budget saying that while using their hire car in March we committed an offence (I assume speeding) and that the French authorities will be in touch.

For the massive effort of passing on our details to the French Authorities we are being charged by Avis the princely sum of 35euros! For emailing over out contact details - outrageous.

Is this new or has anyone else been hit by one of these?

How is committing an offence a 'misfortune'?

I know what you're saying but I didn't murder anyone.

The misfortune is being caught and fined for a minor offence like being a little over the limit when trying to make a flight

For the trouble of finding out who rented the car, then passing over those details the relevant authorities, then informing you about it, €35 hardly sounds outrageous to me.

Really? Typing in a registration number and date into a computer; copy and pasting some contact detail and sending an email - 2 mins work tops

    Nothing new I'm afraid
If anyone get pinged in one of our company cars, the lease company levy a similar fee

Not committing an offence is the best way to avoid this.

As stated above, many firms charge employees with a company car a similar fee.

Look - you committed an offence. Doesn't matter if you were late for a flight.
You can moan all you want but you're still going to have to pay the fine.

No I didn't, never happened to me, I only had to inform the drivers when required

mcfisco - apologies, quoted your post rather than OPs!
