Pricing of fruit and veg

I am having increasing difficulties working out whether it is cheaper to buy pre-packaged or loose fruit and veg. For example when I was shopping today it is very difficult to work out whether it's cheaper to buy 5 apples in a bag for £2.50 or to buy 5 lose ones at £1.90/kg?

The packaged fruit and veg is always priced per bag or tray without a weight whilst the loose fruit and veg is always labelled per lb/kg.

Although the supermarkets are acting within the pricing guidelines, can the supermarkets be held to account over this? It makes a complete mockery of strap lines such as "helping you to save money everyday". Please can you take this up Martin Lewis?

I just take the pre-packed bag to the scales to check the weight. :)

As a supplier of produce to one or more of the supermarkets the majority of pre packed product is more expensive,it costs extra for labour and packaging and is often seen to sell smaller size product.

A rule of thumb I have: it's cheaper loose, unless they are peppers. They are always cheaper in packs.

That's a myth, pre pack peppers are size 60-80 mm in diameter and loose peppers are 70-90 mm in diameter.
