Hiring a car in France - Young Drivers Surcharge!

Hi guys,

I'm off to South France next year to visit some family, and was hoping to rent a car while I'm out there to get a bit of freedom!

Now it all looked good, until I read the terms and conditions of the box I was about to tick, agreeing to pay an extra £210 for the week because I'm only 21!

Does anybody know any companies who don't do this? Or any way around it?

My idea so far is to have my father hire the car and just put me on as an additional drive, but I'm not sure if that would actually surpass the charge!

This really does make hiring a car completely unfeasible! I could buy a car and have my family re-sell it and cut less of a loss, or even make a profit, I just don't think I can be bothered with that quite frankly!

Cheers guys and gals,

Keys.

Will you be 22 at the time of rental?

Consider an independent car hire firm who have older cars.

    Nope I'll still be 21!

I could do but from what I can see they do the same, unless I try renting one while I'm out there?

Not speaking French doesn't help either!

There's car hire from that French supermarket chain.

Have a go with google maps, drop a pin where you'll be based and then search nearby for car hire.

I'll be in Ruoms, which is pretty 'out of the way', but I'll give that a shot! Cheers mate! Issue with that has to be that I can't read the Ts&Cs

Copy the T&Cs and paste into translate.google.com

I think cargo.fr MAY be my answer, NOW I've just got to work out if I'll 100% need a Credit Card for it (I got rid of mine as soon as I paid it off!), AND I've heard horror stories of some rental companies holding up to £1500 of funds on a card as a deposit, so I'm hoping if I pre-pay they won't do this! We shall see!

There's https://www.icarhireinsurance.com or https://www.insurance4carhire.com for cheaper excess insurance, not sure if it applies to 21 year olds though. There might be a bit of cash back if you go through quidco or topcashback.
