Where are you? July 2013
From widescreen desert sunsets and the romance of the spice souks to an Aladdin's cave of modern shopping wonders and architectural marvels, Dubai has all you need for a sensational short break. Enter this month's Where Are You? competition and you could win a four-night holiday for two at the Park Regis Kris Kin. Set in the historic quarter, the hotel is well-placed for a dhow voyage down the Creek, while the 19th-floor restaurant gives guests a bird's-eye overview of the city. The prize, worth about £3,500, includes four nights' B&B at the hotel and a complimentary meal for two at its Kris Restaurant, plus return flights on an award-winning Qantas A380 from Heathrow to Dubai and transfers. The holiday must be taken before 30 June 2014.
To enter this competition, turn to page 150 of the July 2013 issue, and identify the location where the photograph was taken, and send in your entry to arrive by 30 June. All correct entries will also be included in the Grand Prize draw at the end of the current competition period (1 October 2012-30 September 2013).
Clue:
Most people don't think about seaweed very often. When you're at the beach, you may have to step over the occasional slimy tangle of shore spaghetti on the way in for a dip. No big deal. But to the women in this picture, seaweed is a valuable resource. They are tending an underwater plantation where it is grown on strings tied between sticks embedded in the sand. The shallow, warm waters off the north-east coast of this tropical island are aquaculturally ideal, allowing the crop to be accessed on foot (elsewhere, it is grown in deeper water, which means boats are needed and it's much more of a palaver).
Seaweed grows at an almost alarming speed: just two weeks after new cuttings are attached to the strings, the fronds are long enough to harvest. The crop is then hung up or spread out to dry before being shipped off and processed, its essential minerals extracted and used in everything from medicines and cosmetics to food preservatives. The island - the largest in a famous archipelago - has historically been known for spices rather than seaweed: cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon are still produced here and sold at the market in the capital, a World Heritage Site. Where are you?
