Currency for First Lad's Holiday

18 yo DS is going on his first lad's holiday to Kavos in August and we are trying to work out the best way for him with regards to currency.

I was thinking about a prepaid currency card but don't know what to look for. The thinking behind a prepaid card is that then he doesn't have to take his bank card. I would guess that he would only use it at ATMs to draw cash out rather than make purchases.

Can they be topped up by us at home? My thoughts were that he (we) would put so an amount on to start with then top it up half way through the week (in case he loses it.) Can you use them like that?

ICE - International GBP Pound Travellers Cashcard

Apply in your name and just give him both of the cards, with instructions to keep the spare one safe. If he loses one, he just lets you know. You then inform ICE who will block the card and move the balance to the spare one. Yes, get the GBP card.

Thanks for this. Just had a look this morning and it appears to fit the bill better than I was expecting. I like the idea of the spare card.

A couple of questions though, why is it better to get the GBP card?

Also, am I right in thinking that money left on it doesn't expire. So we can keep the card (and any money) until one of us goes away again. The website only talks about that you can cash it in within 30 days if you want to.

Better rates than foreign currency cards. Mastercard rate minus 1.85%. You can use any left over credit at home without needing to convert or pay ATM charges to withdraw.
