I would like to thank the main sources of comment and suggestions on this particular forum; Dunstonh, EdInvestor and Jamesd. Since subscribing to these pages a year or so ago my knowledge of pensions and other related investments and tax wrappers has grown enormously. I am now confident enough to take charge of my PPP and I am now reaping the benefits.
My PR money (£5000 and no contributions since 1993) had sat in a middle of the road fund - Scottish Equitable 'Mixed' for over 17 years only making mediocre returns on the investment. Since I have begun to understand and appreciate different funds and taking on an agressive and much more risky investment profile my fund had increased. Whilst I accept that the market can fluctuate, and has been on the 'up' over the last few years, I am confident that I have done the right thing and my money is working much harder for me.
My small investment pot (now totalling £17,700) has increased by 40% in 2 years, 21% over the last year and 11% since the beginning of January.
Thanks all, and keep up the excellent 'suggestions'.....

I would endorse the OP's comments entirely.
Those mentioned, and others, are doing more for building people's confidence in taking control and removing the mystique from the industry than any subscription to a finance magazine/sunday newspaper (whose motives can be questionable).
I have also gone from a mediocre balanced managed fund to a wide range of funds (pension/ISA) that accurately reflect my risk profile - not that I knew what a risk profile was 12 months ago.
Well done & keep it up (unless the market crashes, in which case I will blame everyone but myself and hunt you all down like dogs!).0 -

LOL.:D
People worry far too much about stockmarkets crashing. History shows they always recover, and this process takes a maximum of five years ( but usually much less).
That's why you are normally advised that you need to be willing to invest for 5 years - it's so you don't lose money.
Many a successful investor will say that a key skill you need is a very simple one - patience.Trying to keep it simple...0 -
I also endorse the OP's comments. There are posters in this forum who are very helpful, patient with newbies, and a great source of information. I've learned lots in the last year or so, and now feel confident about handling my S & S Isa and monitoring my funds, and will soon being putting my pension in a SIPP. Thanks, guys, have a virtual beer on me  .Life is not a dress rehearsal.0
