Fruit splitting like this is usually the result of the plant being too dry and then getting a spell of ample water.0

Mojisola is absolutely right. It's the same effect you get with tomatoes that receive erratic watering. Curiously (at least here in Kent) the lousy summer has actually been a lousy dry summer and I have had to water the denizens of my fruit cage surprisingly often considering how cold it has been.0
