Nursing Student struggling with benifits mindfield!

Hi, this is the first time I've even been on the site.
I started my Nursing degree in March this year the uni is in England and I live in Wales, I have no idea if my NHS bursary is taken into account for Council Tax benefit the uni said I would be eligible to claim it but I have been turned down. I have renewed my tax credits today and they said they are only interested in taxable income, is this true for council tax benefit too? I have never claimed any benefits before and have NO CLUE what I'm doing!
I have 4 children one disabled and in receipt of middle rate DLA, Im married and my husband earned £11200.
I hope someone can help me as I'm so confused :(
Thanks in advance and sorry for all the questions .:o

  • A student is exempt from Council Tax so you should get a 25% discount.

The Bursary is treated as income but some of it is disregarded - they would take your partners wages and your Tax Credits as income.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

Are you sure that you have claimed all the grants/loans that you are entitled to?

Please check with your uni welfare officer.

As already said, most of your bursary will be taken into account for HB and CT support but they will also count any other loans/ grants that you are eligible for even if you don't take them!
  • hi there i started a nursing degree a few years ago, and was a single mum of one at the time. i received as bursary but still got housing benefit and council tax benefit, and my tax credits stayed the same

so if i were you i would speak to your uni welfare officer, or go back to the council and ask them to check again. although it may have changed since i was a student.

hope this helps, and good luck with your course :) x
  • Thank you all. I will contact the uni welfare officer, it's so hard trying to get consistent information from the net!
    Thanks again. X

You need a Council Tax exemption form from your university - most do it on-line so look on their web-site.

Then your OH needs to apply for Council tax Benefit based on his wage etc.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • Thank you.
I have just made an appointment for next week. X
