Dilemma - Help!!

I started a new job last week. Last week I also got a letter from my local school saying that my daughter had been offered a place there, mornings only, from Sept. I can't work this around childcare so have decided to give up work in Sept - BUT - feel very guilty now that I will be working for about 2 months and then handing in my notice. I know it is the right thing to do as have to put my family first but should I come clean to my employer now or wait until I come to hand my notice in? Feel like I will be messing them around and I don't like that.

Thanks for any advice. What would you prefer if you were an employer.

Personally I would hang on because alot can happen in two months, you might find some childcare. It is worth talking to your employer a bit closer to the time and see if you could work mornings. I am sure there is a law that employers have to be family friendly, but I don't know how this affects you.

They have to consider a request for family friendly hours, but they don't have to grant it. If you're a valued employee they're obviously more likely to grant it. Also if you can suggest proactively how the work could be covered - best of all would be if you knew someone who'd like to work afternoons, or maybe there's another part-timer there who'd be interested in increasing hours.

Have a look at the Working Families site.
