try looking up companion planting on garden websites- things like growing marigolds next to carrots ( i think, but don't take my word for it) - looks nice and also keeps the bugs off your veggies.
I'm not an expert, I can't plant veggies in my soil as it's contaminated, but I think you can grow most things in pots, with the right depth. I'm currently trying mange tout, courgettes and garlic in pots, and they seem to be coming on really well.
Try these links for starters - and if I can grow things, anyone can!

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Buy some cheap veg seeds off ebay. Find any old pots you can. Fill with soil (a compost heap will be a biug help). Plant seeds. Water when they look dryish.

It's really easy. I'm always useless and have grown loads of seedlings. Seeds are amazing!

I got a load of 25 different veg seeds for around a fiver on ebay.
