stolen cash - to claim or not from house insurance?

Hi, can someone please let me know if I can claim from my house insurance.

Purse stolen from handbag: cash £37 plus £250 drawn from atm on credit card within 10 mins of loss (I had made the mistake of writing pin no. in code as a telephone no. - but they were able to suss it out - have already kicked myself a hundred times).

But by writing my pin no. does it mean I am not covered to claim from my house insurance - don't want to ring and ask them incase they make a note of my enquiry and it affects my future premiums. I have already paid renewal for house insurance policy which starts middle of next month - and for the first time it has not gone up.

I have a crime no. from Police.

Thanks in advance for all help/info.
Chris

PS also lost driving licence - so have taken advice on forum re credit checks to prevent identity theft - Thanks.

Be careful as insurance companies will take an enquiry as a claim!
I telephoned one up on behalf of a customer who had lost a ring down the plughole whilst doing the dishes.Although a friend had unplugged the pipe from under the sink the ring could not be found and was presumed lost down the plughole ie outside of the house. As she did not have personal posession cover the 'claim' had been turned down in a matter of minutes. I tried to reason that I was only enquiring but they had none of it!

You will have to handle this one very carefully as they may feel you have acted negligently by keeping your details with the card - a breach of card terms and conditions - and so they do not have to pay out. I hope that you get an understanding soul on the other end of the phone.

Re your PIN written in disguised form. In this case IMHO you SHOULDN'T be liable as you've not written it down in it's orignal form. You can therefore quite honestly claim, when asked not to have written your PIN down in its ORIGINAL form.

Try this link: Let us fight your Chip & PIN fraud case.

There are lots of ways to get hold of someones PIN.

    Or

If your card issuer doesn't believe you, then take your case to the Financial Ombudsman. I wouldn't even attempt to claim the card loss at this stage on your house insurance, as they will probably point you in the direction of your card issuer for this loss.

Make your card issuer aware you have a crime number.

Tip for those who use a PIN with a credit card.

Get yourself Chip & Signature Credit cards and you will never have to worry about someone acquiring your PIN or PINs.

    Good luck.

It is possible simply to get one of these on request or do you need to have a disability?

How much hassle will you get using the card?
I've seen shops locally that say they won't accept cards without a PIN.

No you don't have to be disabled, this is a myth, but it is up to the card issuer if they issue you with a Chip & Signature card or not.

If you have difficulty remembering numbers, or seldom used numbers then they should give you one.

If you're concerned about personal safety, i.e. targetted for your cards by a PIN theif, then ask for one.

If you contact your card issuer by phone, best to speak to Customer Service and ask for a Supervisor.

Some card issuers do their best to put you off and give you wrong information, persevere until you speak with someone who knows what they are talking about.

If they advise you to change your credit card PINs to numbers you'll remember then say you're already using the number you remember.

If they advise you to use the same PIN with all your cards, tell them APACS advises you not to do this.

Easiest thing to do is apply in writing, giving the reasons above and if you can't get a card that meets YOUR needs, ie. Chip & Signature, tell them you'll go elsewhere.

Extreme meausures: Keep attempting to use your card, type in 4 numbers and keep requesting a new PIN. This way they'll offer you a Chip & Signature card.

    Good luck.
