But don't the kids love dressing up and doesn't it help them become more interested in history and other subjects. When we went to Alnwick Castle the thing all the little kids were queuing for was the dressing up as knights and princesses. OK it's a hassle, so can't parents get organised and start a facebook group or similar so they can share costumes. Just saying!

I personally don't think it adds much to their learning. Like I said previously, DD has recently learned about the Tudors without the school feeling the need to dress up. There is this ugly bug ball that DS is going to tomorrow but there's the option to wear own clothes (which DS is doing). There is a PTA group on Facebook and there have been tips swapped on there this week for those who want to make an outfit (ie, someone had a green sleeping bag which would have been suitable for a slug costume! PMSL).

Such a moany thread this one though - I'm not the most sympathetic when it comes to teachers and schools in general, I had a miserable experience of both, but I do feel that sometimes they can't win - if they didn't do anything at all then parents would moan, and then when they do organise dressing up days or whatever, parents moan. You can't please all of the people....

Although DD/DS's school don't tend to go in for dressing up so much (other than own clothes, pyjamas, etc...) they do have pieces of homework which involve art/collage/craft, etc... which I am completely useless at. But do I moan? Well a little bit when I'm feebly attempting to help my kids, but eventually we end up happy with our efforts. I can't be bothered wasting energy whining about every little thing the school do that I don't agree with. :D

And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

I'm blessed with a girl who is single minded and doesn't care what anyone else thinks;)

Wacky hair day = red princess dress
Wear yellow day = red princess dress
Monster day = red princess dress
Book day = red princess dress
Christmas disco = red princess dress

N.b. she does have a selection of dressing up....but we've definitely had our money's worth out of the old faithful red dress.

The children love it though. As a (working) parent I don't mind spending a bit of my time to cobble together a costume for them. Most of the costumes are simple and cheap enough to make/put together if you give them a little thought (or google for ideas!)

I think its a bit of a shame, tbh, that so many people begrudge spending a few hours doing something for their children's benefit.

    I agree with this.
I work full time and have 3 primary school aged kids. I have managed to pull a costume together out of nothing quite a few times! The Kids enjoy it, it's just a bit of fun and most definitely doesn't need to cost a lot of money or even time.

There are loads of ideas on the internet for inspiration!

Have they really been asked to do all that at home, from scratch? What age? And is it a state school?

    Not quite in one weekend.

Its just a normal primary school but with a real emphasis on art and creativity. Which make it a bit difficult in our house as the art gene is missing in our family.

I dont mind making things for my kids, and thankfully do know my way round a sewing machine, I do begrudge paying money for these 'ideas' though. With the best will in the world, money is tight and some of us are living hand to mouth. I could do a tudor, I can do world book day but when DS came home from secondary school with a 'we're having a onesie day as EVERYONE has one' I was stuffed.
We didnt have a onesie, tbh I have never got DS one as I thought they were a bloomin stupid idea for children of a secondary school age and I knew it would soon lose its appeal to a 11 year old boy who is constantly overheating and often kicks the duvet off in the middle of winter, and at £12 - £20 I couldnt darned well afford one!
I am dreading the next red nose day/children in need day incase they come up with the next 'must have' as a money raising idea. Bring back mad hair day!

    I've been Money Tipped!
I can't believe some of the replies on this thread. The kids grow up soooo quickly that a few years of dressing up, (which they absolutely love), is hardly a bad thing. Isn't there something worthwhile to complain about?

Trust me, if you go to school as a 1st class Titanic passenger you're groomed. The girls were in updos and pearls, posh frocks, gloves and big hats. They've never been so well groomed in their lives. Fancy dress doesn't have to mean cheap snaggy nylon and frayed netting, you know.
