Where do you buy good bargain perenials online, was browsing mailgarden site, seems quite good prices, but they dont say what size plants they will be. eg 6 penstemmon, will they be plugs or bigger plants.

I bought some specially chosen ones from a nursery last Sept, and have lost some, even tho we didnt have a bad winter here- hardly any snow.
I even lost chamomile in a clay pot which was outside. Verbena never re appears- doesanyone have any luck with it? do I have to re buy new each year?

All of the plants you've mentioned are hardy but they don't like being in damp/ wet soil. Considoring the vast amount of rain we've had over the last year I wouldn't be at all suprised if this is the problem you've had.
Try mixing some grit into the planting hole and make sure pots are raised off the ground during the winter and that the planting holes are not blocked.

As for where to purchase online - sorry cannot help with that one.

thanks very much, I hadnt considered the rain , and with the sub soil level being clay, sounds like the cause.

Still cant figure why the verbena bon.. failed for 2 yrs, new plants each time, they are meant to self seed but I coulntd tell seedling from weeds.

My verbena bon. came through the winter this year.It got a bit crispy & brown on the edges from frosts but now with all this slightly warmer weather it's coming on a treat! I pulled off all the dead crispy leaves & it's shooting out all over! It's in a container but quite free draining so it's not staying too wet !It's never seeded in the actual garden but I think I probably dead headed before it set seed !

i get lots of mine from ebay here a few I have used this year and have been very happy. Most of they will be a good sized plug plant will grow pretty fast in a nice warm place lots of light.

Also try Morrisons they have lots of perenials 2 for £3.00 good size plants

I asked here about Lemon Verbena, and I was told that it is hardy, and will survive typical winters, atlhough the above ground growth dies back. I think the person who posted said they trimmed back to near the ground and then mulched in late autumn to protect it from frost. It survives to about -5C, so a harsh winter could kill it. Mine was in a cool porch over winter, and planted outside a month ago. Only now is growth appearing from the branches, it can sprout very late, thus giving the impression of being dead.

Lemon verbena grows like a weed in my garden - I'm forever digging clumps up and its roots are strong. I leave them as dead twigs all winter then cut back early spring. The dead foliage helps provide frost protection.
