i dont know where to go next with British Gas, please help!
I'll try to keep this short but it has been going on sooo long now.
Moved in March 11th 2006. Initially kept getting gas bill for £2000 ish in other peoples name and BG refused to change our names. Finally got that sorted, got our first bill for £76. Paid no problems. The next bill comes around Oct time for £200, which i knew wasn;t right as it was over the summer and hardly used the heating etc. Called and explained several times and gave them the new meter reading. They kept saying it would be sorted and we would get a new bill. Still nothing weeks later so i keep on calling, talking to diff people all the time with different promises etc..The it turns out they have the wrong reading for when we moved in, even though i have a copy of the letter that our lettings agency sent them stating the correct reading! They sent their own engineer around...he verified our reading, so again they said a new bill would be with us within 6 weeks.
This was last November/december and still we have no new bill. I have called them so many times i feel like crying just thinking about speaking to them again.
Its now come to the point we are buying our own place and giving notice on the flat. I just know if i call and tell them we are leaving they will have a bill out to us within a week for £500 or something rediculous. And they'll want it all in one go i shoudl think! I just dont know what to do...we've been trying to pay the bloody correct bill for months but they are so incompetent.
Can anyone give us any advice at all?

Homemovers need to amend the opening meter reading. The callcentre staff can't do this, they raise a job for an indian to do which can take weeks. Best bet is to go through and advise you have called several times before regarding the issue and you want to speak to a manager. You should then be passed to Homemovers CLT department who can get accounts amended much faster.0

Go straight to energywatch, they will help you sort this out and probably get compensation for you. I have gone to them twice and both times they have helped me and got me compensation.0

Feanor, i understand where you're coming from. I've just recently spoken to British Gas about a bill they kept sending me for 30 odd pounds, and i received a letter from the British Gas debt collector saying they would be coming round to cut me off for a bill i don't owe!!! I changed my supplier back in February and 3 times i rang through my meter reading all to no resolution. I eventually got through to the closed account section who apologised for their mistake for not closing the account back in February. Ive now just received the final threatening letter today. Ive contacted the debt collectors who've now found out it's been a big mistake and won't be visiting me after all. My advice do not under any circumstances take any utilities from British Gas.0

Hi xmen2, thanks for your reply.
I totally agree, but seems as though we are renting we have no choice as we are not allowed to change the supplier! I have also got the lettings agency onto them as well to no avail.
Luckily we will be moving out soon, but i want to try and get this sorted out before then really..
Thanks again x0
