Tax on training course

I recently changed jobs. My old company charged me for a training course I went on because I left soon after
(not complaining about that).
However should they have deducted it from taxable pay
(reducing my tax burden) or from net pay (which is what they did)?

Wherever I have worked in the past, any payments have come out of net pay. Effectively, you are getting an up front, zero interest "loan" for your training which you are paying off.

Training to maintain your existing skills are tax allowable, training to enable you to do a different trade is not.0
