Poppies

Not anything special, just your common or garden variety shown in this pic.
My question is: have you noticed that new flowers only ever "pop" out during the night, never during the day. In the flowering season, I usually wake up to a new one most mornings. Have you any theories as to why this might be?

Here's a theory, during the night it's cooler and there's more moisture about so the cells of the plant become turgid and this allows young cells to expand thereby popping open the flower case

BTW is that your garden now? my poppies are nowhere near flowering yet. A bit of heat would be welcome

    Whooooosh!
Thanks for that Nodwah but that's the sound of the scientific bit going over my head ;)
That pic was last year, but they are at about the same stage just now - two poppies out and loads to come. It's really sheltered in my back garden though what with the hill behind and we are usually a few degrees higher than that forecast.

Lovely garden!!!! :) Mine right now is just mud, old concrete and a hedge....... oh and a new fence which we put up yesterday! :D

I'm hoping that next year I can have pretty flower beds!

Thank you Frosty. It's tucked in there so that the flowers will stand some kind of a chance of protection from wind and rain.
Thanks Madmum, just a bit of work and a lot of patience will soon transform your mud and concrete into a lovely garden - trust me ;)
