Thursday 18th April - What small DFW things will you do today?

bt1
Posts: 443 Forumite
When we start out on the DFW trail we do loads of "big stuff" that makes quite a difference to our situation. These include having our lightbulb moment, cutting up the credit cards and cancelling Sky and the gym.
But once we have done the bigger stuff, we often feel that we are not making the same amount of progress, when in fact the small steps are helping us form good financial habits and helping us get closer everyday to staying in control and becoming debt free, or staying debt free.
Examples could be hanging washing out instead of using the tumble dryer or leaving your purse/wallet at home to avoid the risk of spending.
So be proud of those small steps, they really are important

Morning :wave: I've been away for a few days as I was in hospital. But was discharged yesterday and it was nothing serious, just painful!
Funny the weather here is lovely, but windy. Beautiful day for washing
* aldi porridge for breakfast mmmm
* heating off
* no petrol day :money:
* check banking
* checked cc statement - need to make a small transaction on cc (so it won't be a NSD then despite being at home on the sofa!) I missed my payment day last month so it means I need to make a small transaction and pay the balance in full this month & next to be able to have the 0% interest free period again...
* all meals from stores - moussaka today mmmmm
* divide & freeze 2 portions of mince out of pack
* watch a film on NowTV
* call lovefilm as they swindled my oh yesterday...
* db is coming to plaster the spare room. Need to ask him very sweetly if he would please consider finishing it on Sunday....
* get oh to sign up for National Trust free entry & print off forms
* need to call my boss and speak about returning to work & giving my notice
* possibly plant some seeds if I feel up to it
Foxgloves can you give me some advice? My seeds just dont seem to be taking. They are past the best before date so am not sure if they are just out of date or if its my soil (from Lidls and is quite twiggy ). I've got them in propagators in the greenhouse :huh: would appreciate some advice! I've planted basil (OOD), bell peppers (in date) chilli (plant this year, end July 13) and a load of toms and they aren't doing anything! ThanksDF as at 30/12/16

Hi Penny-savers,
Good start to the day & feeling positive. So far, I've:
*Done surveys - not many around today, but am more than half way to another £30 debenhams giftcard (Toluna) so am checking in everyday.
*Put ingredients in the slow cooker to make lentil soup, using ham stock I made yesterday.
*Rest of ham stock frozen.
*Last of the rubber ham tonight on a home made pizza.
*Potted on lots more little plants (although it's so windy, I kept thinking the greenhouse was about to blow away with me in it.....with all this dieting, I'm not such heavy ballast as I used to be, lol!) All were free seeds.
*Planted up half a dozen parsley roots from a supermarket parsley pot as I lost all my parsley overwinter & my seeds (extremely old to be fair!) are doing a big fat NOTHING so far!
*Read Martin's newsletter.
Still to do:
*Read the Guardian online instead of buying one.
*Get dough in the breadmaker for tonight's pizza & rolls for packed lunches for the next couple of days.
*Get sewing machine out & take in a skirt & top which are now too big for me. Tacked them both last night & tried on & it looks like I can get them to fit better.
@determinednewms - Sorry to hear about your seeds. It may just be the cold weather we've had. Seeds of some varieties (i.e parsnips) do need to be in date, but I have to say that as I don't like throwing stuff away, I do usually try old seed.....I've got some hollyhocks coming up at the moment that were 'Sow by 2008'. There's no hard & fast answer to it. My tomatoes were sown inside in my cheapy electric propagator & they germinated, but when I potted them up & took them out, I lost half of them INDOORS to the cold. I've got more sown, but still sowed in the propagator as my greenhouse has no heating. If they are not in a heated propagator, could you bring it indoors & try somewhere warmer? Everything is behind this year. I haven't even taken my little chillies, cukes, tomatoes, aubergines, peppers down to the greenhouse yet, as the nights still seem cold, but they will be going this weekend. Basil can be a real sulker. I've failed with one sowing already. Seeds came up (heated propagator indoors), seeds went sickly looking, seeds revived, I DROPPED THEM ALL, they all got squashed, had to sow more last week, so far nothing coming up! The good thing about basil is you still have plenty of time to get some more seed in if you need to have another go. The Lidl compost shouldn't be a problem. I use the New Horizon peat-free sort & that is full of twiggy bits, though smaller seeds prefer the finer seed compost. Check if the compost has got 'capped' where the surface gets hard & crusty & sometimes has algae on it, as this can mean that seedlings can't break through & it can happen quite a lot to seed trays when the weather is damp & cold. I think it's most likely the cold temperatures.......chillies, peppers, toms, etc, are all originally from hot countries & we're not even up to normal April temperatures yet. I do hope things rally for you, let me know, as I love growing stuff & hearing how other people's stuff is getting on.
Cheers,

Afternoon peeps
Managed not to spend anything else yesterday after my shocking fall from grace!
had brekkie from stores this morning and brought in lunch made at home.
Going to have supper from stores tonight
Planning to do my weekly shop (don't need too much anyway) after work tomorrow to avoid going to the pub although the friends I saw last night were trying to persuade me to go out with them - don't really want to because (a) cash and (b) am up early for a long walk and lunch out with a friend on saturday so don't want a hangover!
Think I will just force myself to go to the supermarket and then possibly treat self to a chinese for being good and not going out - read book and watch stuff on sky box instead!
Oh and have resisted c*sta today as much as I love a skinny hazelnut latte!I want to be a writer0 -
Well another NSD planned for me (this will be my 4th in a row). Not feeling the burning need to go shopping now. I had a breakfast meeting which was great as it meant to treat myself - absolutely filled my boots with free bacon etc! Fantastic.
Have a packed lunch that I made on my way in, but no desire to eat it yet, still full from breakfast.
Planning on a bottle of wine tonight with the wife, going to heat up a chilli from stores.
Been invited out for free drinks tonight, but think I'll skip it, have a meeting tomorrow so I don't really want to be fuzzy headed in the morning.
Avoided the taxis no problem, on the way to the station one of the taxi drivers who I used to use all the time beeped and waved to me shouting "We never see you anymore!?" That made me feel very good as I went to catch my train!
Happy day today, hopefully yesterday's no-shopping pain was a blip.
Have a great one everyone.Debt free, moved, got new stuff for the new flat - got everything I wanted and need - now just saving.0 -
