Power Cut - Compensation

I know people have asked about compensation before, but there's one question I can't seem to find an answer to. Here's my story ....

We were without power overnight for 20 hours. I know that we will be entitled to £50 compensation before we have gone over the 18 hour rule, but what happens about my defrosted food and dead tropical fish and tarantula? (no they weren't in the same tank!!)

The distributor don't want to know. My home insurance will pay for the food (but that means the £50 from the distributor will go on my excess!), but I'm not covered for pets!

The distributor say that any claim I have will have to be through my home insurance because 'we do not guarantee 24 hour electricity!!'

Has anyone had to claim for loss of pets through a power cut before?
