Bailiffs - proof I am a new tenant?

Hi All
Got home yesterday to a lovely hand delivered letter from Rundles (Bailiffs) saying they had attended to seize goods for an outstanding debt to Lewisham County Council! It is addressed to someone we have never heard of so telephoned them today to tell them of this and they said I'd need to send proof such as a tenancy agreement or a council tax form.
Call me silly if you like but I don't like the idea of me giving over copies of documents such as this. Am I obliged to do so...?

You are not required to prove that you 'are not' somebody. They are required to prove that 'you are' the correct person which of course they will be unable to do.*Baby step 1 - £0/£500 - Emergency fund*0

This was my thinking too. The letter refers to a Liability order from 2007...how can they just assume they still live here all these years later lol?!0

I had a similar situation and the bailiffs just dropped it when I phoned and said that I'd never heard of the person they were after.
They would have to get the police involved to get into the house anyway, so I would prove your ID to the police as opposed to them if it came to it. Possibly contact Lewisham County Council...they should know from their own council tax records who lives in the property now!Debt April 2013: £38,282.35
Currently: Setting up a DMP and getting positive :j
Proud to be dealing with my debts :beer:0 -
Well thsi is where it gets stranger...I live in Leeds. I can only assume a previous tenant once lived in Lewisham...0

The police are not required for a bailiff to enter a property.they should know from their own council tax records who lives in the property now!
Assuming the records have been updated.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
