1st credit debt letter- what to do?

Hello,

I am new to this. I have received a letter from 1st capital saying I owe £3500 from a lloyds TSB account. I phoned 1st credit to find out what this was relating to. They said it was from a credit card in 2007. They would not give me any further details. They said if I paid it off by the end of the month they would reduce the debt to £2500. I don't even know what the orginal debt was.
I have been to lloyds bank and they say they can't help as the debt has been passed on.
What can I do?
Advice greatly received.
