edited 20 March 2013 at 6:14PM in Is this quote fair?
Hot water flowing very slowly and had a plumber round a he said lots of corrosion in old pipe work.
He quoted me £1300 to replace vented cylinder and cold water feed tank and fit new pipes.

Does this seem very high, it does to me.

Thanks...

Did he disconect the pipework to check for corrosion?? You can only do a visual check of the CWS tank if you dont disconect the pipes.
£1300 seems OTT, but depends on the system you have. Post some pics on here.

You could just have a air-lock in your pipes?? Obv hard to tell without seeing the job.

Concur - first thing that went through my mind when I read "hot water flowing slowly."

OP you need at least one second opinion.

No he didn't disconnect any pipework.
Thanks for replies, all of the pipework is very old in the airing cupboard. Mainly copper but some silver galvanized looking pipe as well, its this that's breaking up apparently.
I tried back-flushing through the mixer tap in kitchen, while leaving the bath tap open.
The water spurts out dirty brown but no change really.
When first opening tap water does flow faster, then slows down.
Cold water feed tank is metal and very old as well.
I will be getting a second opinion now
What price seems more realistic guys if both need replacing?

    Thanks.

Ahh OK. If its old steel barrel rather than copper then yes there is an excellent chance that its full of rust - particularly the pipework from the cylinder to the taps. I replaced some 1" steel barrel pipework dating from the 50's right at the beginning of this year whose bore had narrowed to less that a quarter in places. So there is some sense in making the decision that the cistern should go as well as the pipework and then you have to add up the odds of the cylinder being full of carp (being the rust from the pipework) too. If your hot taps are producing brown water then almost certainly it is.

Having said that £ 1,300 does seem a bit heavy but he's seen it. Don't forget that on replacement of a cylinder it is a requirement that the resultant system be energy efficient to comply with BRs. That usually means the system be upgraded to fully pumped (if it isn't already) when a cylinder is replaced.

You need to get two more quotes TBH for the same scope of work. Then you can make a comparison.

    Cheers
