I came across Heroes of Empire by Robert Stone free on Kindle today. Looks like a cracking Roman adventure for fans of Simon Scarrow and Ben Kane.
AD 411. The heart of the Roman Empire.
Constantine III has seized Britannia and is attempting to make himself Emperor of Rome - and the most powerful man in the world.
But as he leads his army across the channel, the Empire descends into chaos.
Britannia rebels.
Invaders from across the Rhine are on the rampage across northern Gaul and Spain.
And, most threatening of all, the armies of the rival Emperor Honorius are approaching from Italia.
As Constantine's dream of controlling the Empire start to unravel in front of him, he sends his childhood friend Carus on a vital mission behind enemy lines to retrieve one of Christianity's most holy treasures: the True Cross.
But in a world of blood-thirsty battles and treachery, Carus and his Imperial Relic Hunters find themselves fighting for their very lives.
Will they manage to retrieve the True Cross and propel Constantine to victory?
Or the will the Empire crumble in the hands of the invaders?
'Heroes of Empire: The True Cross' is a thrillingly authentic historical drama that will captivate fans of Simon Scarrow and Ben Kane.
"An excellent novella. You can feel the fear and taste the blood. Essential reading for those interested in the colour and darker side of Imperial Rome." - Richard Foreman, best-selling author of Augustus: Son of Rome
"High-octane historical drama. I loved it." - Tom Kasey, best-selling author of Trade Off.
Robert Stone is a writer and historian. He lives in London.
