payment for legal work 'up-front'

We are having house ownership altered to tenants in common, involving a trust and also drawing up new wills. Am well satisfied with the advice received but the firm is asking for payment up front. (They say they are members of the Assoc of Wills and Probate Lawyers.) Is this normal practice? If the firm went into administration before the work was completed presumably my money is 'lost'. Others experiences will be helpful and appreciated.

I haven't been in this situation, It is normal to have to pay some money 'on account' to most solicitors (is it a firm of solicitors?). The money should be maintained in the client account
