Yawn. Most MPs will have their assets in their spouse's name anyway... it simply wouldn't do for it to be public knowledge that they hold shares in the electric/water/gas/bank/mining/retail/insurance company that the public is meant to hate on a particular day.

My wealth is OK mate, paid the mortgage off 10 years ago. How the hell can you expect most youngsters to get a mortgage? Start thinking about other people rather than yourself for a change!

LOL, what planet are you on, all their money is being used in extortionate rents. I have an idea though, perhaps the landlords need a surprise visit to help with the deposit, what do you think?
Buy-to-let and other private landlords are evading over half a billion pounds in tax due on their rental income, new figures reveal. Estimates by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and seen by the investigative website Exaro, reveal that that every year landlords are evading at least £550 million in tax.

This compares with £1.8 billion of tax collected on rental income – meaning more than 23 per cent of tax is being evaded

Oh I forgot the Tories won't allow such outrageous invasion of privacy, human rights and all that, hang on a minute.......
  • Everyone should pay their fair share in tax

With respect I think that the issue here could be far deeper as Philthy Boots quoted...

...wonder how many private landlord MPs rent to other MPs who then claim rent against expenses. now that would be a nice little earner. I assume none of the PLMPs rent out in london but also claim for a second home in london. the possibilities here are endless. Or am I just being cynical

What is wrong with an MP owning a BTL property?

If it is done specifically to rort the expenses system then that should be properly investigated, but otherwise what's the problem? If you think that an MP owning a BTL (or other financial investment) creates an unacceptable conflict of interest then what is the solution? No one with any investments allowed to run for parliament? Doesn't seem workable, or desirable, as most people with an ounce of sense will plan for the future and invest...
