Also it would also depend if family knew about the comping and this community. If they did then why not? Its just a deepest sympathy card from people who knew of him even if not in RL. Judging by the messages on here and on FB he was obviously very well respected and thought of so IMHO letting the family know how much people care is a nice thing to do.
I think it would be a shame if they didn't know about the donations coming in from compers.
Of course I could be talking rubbish as I dont know the circumstances, but people do send sympathy cards after loved ones pass on.
I sent a letter to Ed's sister c/o his old address. Hopefully she would have received this now. It gave the links to this thread, so she could see all your messages, and also the link to the donations thread. I hope this offers some comfort, albeit small, to his family.
I still can't believe it or maybe just still don't want to.“It was only a sunny smile, and little it cost in the giving, but like morning light it scattered the night and made the day worth living.”

I didn't know Ed personally but he was a valuable member of the competition community, always helping others. He will be missed. At least he is at peace now and free from pain.0

That is a lovely gesture, hope she also sees his special FB group too, over 700 members in such a small space of time, which goes to show just how well thought of Ed was by people who genuinely thought so much of him, even though majority of us had never met him in person.
Am still struggling to come to terms with it too SunnySaver, have read and re-read our last conversation & in hindsight have thought why didn't I ask this or that.
Not sure if we are friends on facebook as I'm useless with names, but did light a candle for Ed Friday and I kept it lit & we had to call emergency gas people out for a fairly bad gas leak that night, candle was about a metre away from the source all day, I like to think he was looking down on me laughing, thinking "what the hell is that silly idiot doing!"I love this board, have "virtually" met so many lovely people, people I am honoured to count as friends.

I just spotted this thread today like so many others and I'm in shock.
Ed was a gentleman and I shall greatly miss his FB double act with Russell, a funny pair indeed. My sympathy goes to his family and friends, such a great sad loss.0 -
