I am thinking of getting an in car dvr as I am a new driver for two reasons

- cover my !!!! in respect of false claims eg jokers that brake harshly and deliberately and claim whiplash etc
- view my driving afterwards hopefully pick up on areas for improvement

is it worth getting a front/rear one or just a front one? The front/rear ones are very scarce...
thoughts pls

Wouldn't a visual record of you rear-ending these "jokers" simply act as evidence that you weren't maintaining enough distance to stop safely?

I'll stop short of saying "get a life" but I would urge you to find more enjoyable ways of spending your free time than watching videos of yourself driving to the shops and so on - possibly spending time socially with friends or something.

    A what?

And I'd argue that both my comments are constructive. The second one in particular.

    Of course I can read.

Surely my ability to comprehend the words in your posts and respond to them via my own posts is evidence enough of this?

You can write too, as your rather pathetic addendum of your own username to the 'title' field attests.

Why do you do this by the way? Is it some mark of 'authenticity'?

I'd probably just run with a front one. If someone rear ends you its almost invariably their fault.

The cheaper front ones dont record your speed, the more expensive ones do.

They are pretty much all HD quality, but it would be worth buying one from somewhere that you can get reviews on them too.

It's there so that lesser mortals notice it and feel compelled to comment on its presence.

    As you have demonstrated. :)

I tried to set one up in my car, using a 4 channel dvr,but have been unsuccesful with the dvr's having melt a microchip on the pcb. The 2nd dvr failed to bring up the menu screen on the lcd monitor. I can recommend the 4 channel, with an infra red camera. Anything else has a poor picture quality.

Wouldn't a visual record of you rear-ending these "jokers" simply act as evidence that you weren't maintaining enough distance to stop safely?

A woman was killed recently when a team of scammers braked suddenly from high speed in the outside lane causing a motorist to stop. She was then hit from behind by a van which couldn't stop in time.

so unfortunately this sort of person is far from a "joker"

One of the scam team's drivers (presumably the one who braked sharply for no legitimate reason?) was convicted for causing death by dangerous driving.

So even if you were driving so close that you couldn't stop in time, video evidence showing that the car in front braked sharply for no reason, would be able to show that at least some of the blame lay with the driver in front, and might be enough to help the police put together a fraud case against them.
