Car insurance required, short term, young driver?

Hi, my son aged 19, passed his test last month, and is in the army based aboad at the moment.
His licence has just come through from the DVLA so when he gets home next week (for 2-3 months for training) he wants to get a car just for the period he is home as he does not need one when he goes back to his unit.

Where should I look for short term car insurance, thats suitable for someone who is based abroad?

He is on the electoral roll at home, so would this satisfy the 'permanent UK resident' question? or does this mean he has to physically be in the UK all the time?

Thanks for reading. I will also post on the armed forces board.

Short term insurance is high and it may be better looking for an annual policy that has reasonable cancellation terms. (it is not just a case of paying monthly for 3 months then stopping)
Depending on the car and where you are in the country you should probably expect it to be £1000+ for the 3 months

Usually the companies that come lower down in the comparison tables.

Cheaper quotes are usually cheap for a reason.

If you can get 3 months cover for £1000 snap it up. I would expect that for 3 months on a standard policy,.
    Short term maybe higher.

But a lot also depends on your postcode.

    Ok thanks.
Are most of them likely to want a large deposit due to his age as well as the monthly payments and cancellation charge?

Ring around some independent/small car hire firms to see if it works out cheaper to hire rather than buy. Might not work due to his age but its worth a try.

Insurance will be different to everyone. And even vary between different months,

So its pot luck on what the quotes will come out like.

Depends on the car also. Choose a company and choose a 1600cc car. get a price. Buy a car with a smaller engine 1400cc and you think its the same or less for the premium.
But that company have more claims for the smaller engined model so charge more.

Held licence 1 month, zero no claims, Army. it wont be cheap.

Premiums of £4000 are common for 17 and 18 year olds. At 19 maybe a bit less but still not cheap.

Thanks everyone. I have looked into it some more and its just not going to work. I can't find anything reasonable so OH has offered to be his taxi service for the next few months.
I found that he can be added as a temporary driver to OH's insurance, but not untill he has held his licence for 6 months, which will be handy to know for in the future.

But he could wipe out your partners no claims if he has a bump. Protected no claims etc may not apply if a yound/inexperienced driver is at the wheel.

I wouldnt risk my no claims.

Insurance is costly enough these days.
