Now maybe a good time to get an allotment.

£80 wouldn't go far in the shops for fruit and veg and there's four of us in our family to keep going. I kept rough notes of what I harvested over the year with a rough estimate of what similar would have cost in the shops and it was easily going over the £1000 mark once I included soft fruit, posh veg like sweetcorn and asparagus, herbs, fancy salad mixes etc.

I also kept rough notes but I only got to about £350, but I accept I am a beginner and last year was a bad year because of the weather.
But even if I could produce £1000 worth, that is £20 every week of the year, I'm not sure we could eat that amount of vegetables (just 2 of us).
Do you spend that much on veg now you have given it up?

Also my gripe is the increase to £75 rent, I had no issue when it was £30 as yours was.

I'm not sure if looking at allotments as money savers is the right thing to do.

Certainly if you consider the amount of time you spend there, its uneconomical. Some crops can help the money side, such as soft fruit etc. which is eye wateringly expensive at the shops but why bother with onions if you can get a 5kg bag from Morrisons or Tescos for £2? Thats less than the cost of onion sets in some places.

For me though its far more about having a hobby and doing something I enjoy.

    Same as homebrewing.
