Now maybe a good time to get an allotment.

Having a chat to some of the guys from various allotments, It seems there are quite a few vacant plots.

Due to the price increases a lot have given them up.

Several commitee members on one site worked hard to get it upto full occupancy and clearing unused plots and spaces for new smaller plots.

Then the price goes up and a lot of their hard work has gone down the pan. They have given up it seems.

So if you want a plot, Maybe now is the time to apply?

I think when you consider how much money you save in the long run growing your own veg, the cost of the allotment is very reasonable.

£40 last year and £70 this year. And the plots are nowhere near the size some people mention on here.

    Roughly 60ft x 20ft.

Cost of the allotment reasonable for some, But if you have one in the lower corner then it was too wet to plant much at all last year. Even the potatoes were rubbish.
Raised beds and polytunnels seem the way to go for lots. More expense.

No discounts for early payments anymore it seems.

I have 2 plots on 2 separate allotments. 1st plot i got within 24 hours of asking.
2nd plot i got in about 2 weeks.

There are lots of vacant plots around here.

The waiting times here are quite variable but for the site I really want I have been told it will be over a year. As for the cost I think it is about £30 ish for the year and a few days of your time each year to tidy up/maintain the site.

How can you say it's rubbish, it may well be reasonable in your area but it's not the same everywhere.

Ours went from £25 the year before last to £40 last year and £75 this year. I think that is too much. you can buy a lot of vegetables for £75. and when you add the cost of seeds, compost etc, I am not convinced you can break even on the cost anymore.

There is no waiting list in my area, there are dozens of empty plots, I expect allotments will be lost to housing development soon.
