Hows does buy 1 get 1 cheapest free work

For example Bertolli 500g at tesco has this offer, I wrong assumed it was buy 1 get 1 free at first and couldn't work out why the total in the basket didn't add up then I realised it wasn't cheapest free, so cheapest Bertolli product i.e 250g , is that right?

Also Lake District Cheddar Mild 350G has this offer but they don't seem to have a cheaper option from their brand, so what exactly is the cheapest option free I am getting in each case here?

If you click on the "buy one get cheapest free" you will see there are 27 products in that promotion.

So you're supposed to choose two and the cheapest will be free (it doesn't appear to work on two the same).

If you add four in a promotion to your basket the two cheapest will be free, if all four are the same price you should simply get two free.

Hmmm... don't follow this, so I have added the Lake cheddar 350g(£3.49) and if I add it again the TOTAL price in the basket doesn't go up, so it's like buy 1 get 1 free, but, the red arrow is showing, £6.98 i.e two times the price.

So which is it, I seem to be able to but two of the Lake cheese and only be changed for one yet the red arrow indicates that I am being charged for two.

Yet with the Bertolli 500g (£1.90) if I do similar i.e add two of them the total does change but not twice the price i.e £3.80, changes by a smaller amount.

Any ideas?

Buy one get the cheapest free.

Well firstly you look at all the products in that offer, don't confuse several offers that are Get the Cheapest Free as they may come under a different offer. You have to buy two products from the same offer!

A ,B, C & D may be in one offer while F,G,H & I are part of another offer.
So pick up any two items from the any one offer and if item A is £1 and item C is £1.25 then you pay for Item C and get item A for free etc. If you buy all four item from the offer then the more expensive two are what you pay for and the cheaper two are free. If you buy 2 or 4 of the same thing you only pay for two items.

I've just done a test of this.

2x Bertoli show as £3.80 in red, basket total £1.90
2x cheese show as £7.98 in red, basket total £3.49

2x cheese and 2x bertoli in basket show as £7.98, £3.80 promo savings, total £7.98. So 2x bertoli free which is correct under the promo terms.

So in all cases the discount has been correctly applied and does in fact work on two products the same.

Don't try to understand the trolley or you will go mad, the system will calculate the grand total including all your offers correctly at the time your order is picked and paid for (not when putting in the basket or checking out).

Lake and Bertolli are in the same promotion, it's not the cheapest of two Lake products and the cheapest of two Bertolli products, it's the cheapest two in any promotion group. All the products in a single promotion group can be seen by clicking on the brightly coloured offer banner. If you had an odd number from a promotion group in your basket only one of a 'pair' may be discounted.

I had an empty basket and added two identical Bertoli, discount applied correctly, then emptied and added two identical Lake, again discount applied.

Although this is a multi brand offer it appears to work fine on two identical products from the same brand.

Don't dispute that, as per my first post if all four are the same two will still be free. But if you add two Bertolli and two Lake you will get the two Bertolli free because they are the two cheapest - one free Bertolli for every one paid for Lake.

These offers really annoy me when they calculate it that way.
Obviously I understand that if you buy two items in the offer then you get the cheapest free. That's perfectly reasonable.
But, when you buy more than two, why don't they give you all the even ones free?
If you were in the shop and had your wits about you, you could organise your shopping into two or more different baskets to make this work. Why should you have to? And with online shopping you don't even get the chance to do this as you'd pay for delivery twice?
Crazy. Something can cost you more with it being included in an offer than if it wasn't included in the offer!
