Wanna change my bank

I'm with the co-op and after loads of hassle with them - some my own fault - I really want to leave.

Trouble is, I don't think I'll do very well on a credit score for another bank to open an account for me. :o

Do I open something like a Citibank account so I can be rid of the Co-op, or do I keep my head down, get back on track, and wait til I can open an account with a high street bank??? And how long would that take??

Come on MSEs - help!

GB

I applied to A&L through reading posts from people on here and was accepted with a cheque book and VISA debit card. I'd given up years ago trying to open a proper account as I was sick of the 2nd class envelope's waiting for me when I got home. The one's that start like this:

    Dear Mr XXXXX

Thankyou for your recent application for a bank account. Unfortunately after......

It's at this point I'd stop reading and put it in the bin!

I'm still waiting for the stuff from my new bank account to come through the post but my experience with the A&L has been good so far. The woman you speak to are down to earth and friendly.

    Yes GeordieBird it is Alliance&Leicester.

I've heard similar stories to Keyser123's and have also heard of people being turned down by them too so it's all depedent on your individual financial situation and credit score but I would say it's worth trying them or someone else to at least see if you could get an account. If a couple turn you down though I would refrain from applying to lots as too many credit checks in a short period of time will just harm your credit score further. Good luck whatever you decide.

    Hi Geordie,

Why not open a basic account?

Some come with debit cards, like Clydesdale/ Yorkshire Bank ReadyCash or LloydsTSB cash account. Once your back on track, upgrade or move to someone else if you find you need it.

    Good luck

That's exactly what I want to do.

I'm worried that another bank wouldn't even let me do that.

Me and the OH tried to open a joint bank account them we moved in together in February, but were turned down. All we wanted was the Co-Op basic bank account.

I will try A&L, and if now joy, stick with the crappy Co-Op and try again in another 6-9 months.

    Thanks for all your advice!
