Horse meat shopping tips

A BBC story mentioned that horse meat is around a fifth or a sixth of the price of beef, so there seems to be some significant downshifting potential from trying it. But I'm not familiar with this meat, retail suppliers in the UK who will only supply meat from animals with a proper human-rated passport* or how to prepare it. Anyone got any tips on suppliers and what to watch out for when buying it?

I see some interesting recipes in this Guardian story and New Statesman stories, any better sources?

*Horses in the UK have to have a passport that indicates whether they are intended for the human food chain. Vets must not use medicines that are unsuitable for human consumption on such a horse, if they do, the passport is adjusted to bar the horse from human consumption.

Ingredients being cheaper doesn't mean products are so much cheaper to the consumer when you consider overheads and (lack of) demand.

  • Your local butcher should be able to order it in if you ask but very few places stock it as a regular item other than those companies who specialise in exotic meats at premium prices.

Having lived in Germany and shopped in Holland I have had Horse a few times.

I really want to try Goat but the prices seem so OTT and the delivery from a lot of places make the prices silly, @ £13 (minimum) per 500g plus delivery of at least £7 (and then some on other sites) it makes this on expensive meat to want to try

You can get goat from most ethnic/halal butchers. Often called "curry goat", usually sells at around £4/£4.50 per kg.

It's very tasty, but needs to be cooked long and slow. I've used in in curries and in tagines:)

As my local Butchers are not that good (mostly the cheap tray of meat etc. not much chance of getting it locally and my nearest Butcher is a fair drive away).

As for cooking much like Beef really if you want it nice and tender.
