Ebay: new seller query - non paying bidder/second chance offer

Hi all,

I've started selling on ebay for the very first time and am selling my lower value items first to build up some good feedback.

My firm item was a computer game that sold at auction for £6.01. However, the winning bidder had contacted me about 10 minutes before the auction closed to ask me to withdraw their bid, as they had not seen (although it was clear in the title) that this was not actually the format of game they needed for their computer. I did not see their message until after the auction closed.

I don't want to be unhelpful (and am conscious of the need to get good feedback), so I made a second chance offer to the next bidder at their top bid of £6. They have not accepted this bid.

Can anyone advise me on what to do next? I obviously don't want to pay the ebay final value fees that are showing on my account, but I also don't want to get difficult with my very first buyer and force them to buy!!! Can I just relist the item, and if I do, will I automatically get a credit for the first set of final value fees?

Sorry - it's all quite confusing to start with :(

Thanks in advance for your help :A

  • The only way to get your final value fees back is to either send a cancellation request or open an unpaid item case. Both have risks.

If you send a cancellation request there is a chance that they will refuse even though they have said they don't want it - it does happen. They can also leave feedback and stars.

If you open an unpaid item case they may pay to avoid getting the non paying strike then leave bad feedback anyway or claim item has not been received.

You can only open one case. You can't send a cancellation request then open an unpaid item case if they don't accept.

Thank you purple321 - I will try contacting them again and then possibly try a cancellation request - is that a drop down option in My Ebay?

  • Yes - next to the order details there is a drop down menu - click on resolve a problem and then follow instructions to cancel transaction...
