shill bidding private listings

I am looking into getting a welder, and thought ebay would a good place. To be honest, disapointed. It is mainly cheap useless Chinese welders going for nearly new money.

What I did notice was a few listings that were private. Started at very low values, then suddenly a few days in rapid competitive bidding forced the price up. I am I right to suspect shilling? Is there any other reason to use a private listing?

That sounds like a normal bidding pattern to me. If you suspect shilling then check bidders percentage of bids with that seller.

I thought that private listings hid bidder identities?

E-bay made it very easy for Shill bidders and are very reluctant to do anything about them.
They put the price up and they make more money.
    Be happy...;)

It should still be possible to see the percentage of items bid on by a bidder with that seller, all buyer IDs are now hidden regardless of private listings or not.

Soolins right - all bidders are hidden.

All a private listing does is stop the item description showing in feedback. Handy if your buying naughty underwear etc.

In Germany - all listings were private. Don't know if thats still the case. It was due to data protections laws.
