What are your rights when they no longer sell the item you want replaced?

I returned a pair of broken headphones to Argos under guarantee. When I got them home I discovered they weren't the same make (they didn't mention this). I only bought the original headphones because of specific features (extremely long lead, volume control) that the replacement doesn't have. These headphones are still sold elsewhere so I was hoping for my money back so I could buy them again.
I emailed Argos to complain and asked if I could have my money back. They replied with an apology and asked if I'd like them to discuss this with the store for me. I said yes but received no further reply so had to take them back again. They said I could only have another (different) pair of headphones, not my money back or vouchers.
I'm now stuck with a useless pair of headphones I don't want and will never use.
Are you entitled to your money back in these circumstances? (I would reluctantly accept vouchers.)

I don't understand why you emailed them.
Just take them back to the store with the receipt and tell them they are not the ones you ordered, and that the replacement they gave you is of no use to you.
I take it you are within 30 days of buying them and they are still in the original box.
You will get a lot further face to face than through email.0 -
Because I'm very bad at confronting people! And we've had that discussion already and they said no so I don't see why it would be different this time unless I had something to back it up with.
Unfortunately I've now misplaced the receipt though it does still have the pick-up ticket on the box. It's about 30 days since I got them, but my mum's been in hospital so I've had more important things on my mind.
