recorded delivery

Not sure if in right place but I bought some stamps on ebay and they have arrived this morning whilst I was at work. The envelope was put through my door but on the envelope is written "signed for 25/1" obviously by the postman as no one else in. Can he do this?? I have tried googling but cant find who legally should sign for items, if there is such a thing, but I would have thought someone who actually lives in the house, or no??

Many thanks.

No, but then you would have had a card through the door and had to go to the sorting office to collect. Your Postie has done he and you a favour, it's a win win situation. My Postie is lovely and bends so many rules ... it's really great service I want to shout how fantastic he is to the Post Office, only problem is if I said half of what he does for us I'd get him into trouble ;-)

OK thanks but I can actually see the sorting office from my house and am always there with parcels myself so never a problem on that score. Just wondered if it was OK, but yes you are right he has done me a favour I suppose. Just a bit concerned I think. Thanks for replying.
  • We're not supposed to but I have it done it a couple of times but only for people that have asked me to and that I can trust. I will not do it for Special Delivery. Also if someone leaves a note on the door asking me to leave parcels in a specific place I take the note and keep it just in case of a problem.

Thank you, you have put my mind at rest now. I suppose I would be more concerned if it had been signed for and I hadn't received it.

And therein lies the problem for sellers who use recorded for security. Anyone can sign for it and basically put it through any door, so when buyers claim they don't have their item, but tracking shows they do- they could well be right.

Thats why i now make sure some items won't fit through the letterbox - if they are of value.

I believe Amazon do it too.

Good idea about making packages too large, but threads on here suggest that some posties trying to be helpful and with the agreement of householders might sill sign and leave the parcels 'somewhere safe'.

I do think that if householders are happy to allow recorded to be signed for on their behalf then they also sign a RM document to say they will never attempt to make a claim for an item not received it it transpires to have been signed for and dumped somewhere.

Yes I know, that is not practical but sellers should not have to pay up for private agreements made between a buyer and the postman.

It's not a private agreement, some do some don't. I even had a parcel 739'd and I work for them!! It's the same as you signing for a neighbours parcels. I sign for my neighbours as part of the P.O. new initiative of leaving parcels with neighbours. If I know they are out I bring them home with me.

Simple, send it Tracked no signature needed, safe place if no one home. This is why you will find your parcels left in various places. We are only responding to customers instructions. Amazon also use the "safe place if no answer".

We used to have a lovely postman who would 'sign for' recorded delivery and pop them through the door. I rarely buy recorded delivery items as I can't see the point in it, but from time to time there was something I really wanted.

On the subject of things being too large to go through the postbox....

Sometimes I might buy something that should be small enough to go through myletter box when I'm out. I hate it when I come home to find a red card and go to the sorting office only to find it is my small item in a huge box.

Tracked would be excellent for many of us but it is only available for companies sending large volumes.
