Sad times - no more tinned tuna in the garage

DD, who graduated in the summer, and is now working, has had to work late tonight. She was supposed to be going out, so I had not counted her in for dinner. I offered her a jacket potato with tuna, and she told me there was no tuna left in the house. DH just went out to the garage and came in with the last 3 tins he could find.
I cannot say when the last time was I bought tinned tuna, but certainly not within at least the last 2 years. DS and DD always took quantities of tuna back to university with them, so I always had plenty in stock, and I definitely never paid more than 50p per tin. Times and prices have changed. Sainsburys have 4 tins of Princes tuna in brine, on special offer @ £3.79. Does anyone know if I can do better than this?

I got some tuna in offer from Tesco - can't remember the brand but it was 4 tins for £3. So 75p a tin, same as the value stuff, but much better quality and more tuna and less brine I reckon too!0

Home bargains are 2.99 for 4. Tins of the princes brand. I was lucky ans sticker up at 1.99 from Asda a couple f months back.0

What are you all going to do when there are no more tuna ?0

Aldi/Lidl 57p a can and it's really good. Makes me cringe when I think I used to buy 4 cans of John West for £6!! What a waste of money.0

We love the Aldi stuff too and ours recently started stocking 4 packs for £2.19 I think. I know it was marginally cheaper than the separate tins.
TBH not seen any decent offers in the big stores on tuna for over a year. Occasionally Lidl get J west 4 packs for somewhere between £2.50 and £3, but even that seems to have stopped.

Whilst its true some varieties of tuna are classed as "at risk", and I don't underestimate the issue of disappearing species, the vast majority of tuna eaten in this country especially from tins, is skipjack tuna. Skipjack is very resilient to fishing, fast growing and fast breeding.
Unfortunately sometimes whilst fishing for skipjack the other varieties can sometimes get caught as well, but thats a different issue.
We love to eat many different varieties of fish and shell food in our household and we do like both fresh and tinned tuna and its unlikely that skipjack will disappear any time soon.
