Whatever, you still fail to answer the question posed in #1.

    Err..

What exactly is this product then?
    http://www.aviva.co.uk/short-term-car-insurance/
    or this one:
    http://www.provisionalmarmalade.co.uk/

So it's clearly not impossible, although if you need it it probably rules out a good part of the insurance market

    Why you "err.....".

This thread is about permanently insuring a friends car to make use of NCD!

"Your"suggested products don't let you use any NCD at all!!

I was disagreeing with this comment:

Insurers won't let you insure a car you don't own or are the RK for.

Which is relevant, because one solution (though not a good solution IMO) might be for the OP to take out a policy on the friend's car, thus keeping the NCD.

Easiest way to do this would be to remain the registered keeper (note, the RK is not necessarily the legal owner)

I've actually done this in slightly different circumstances. I'd just got a company car and I had an old Mk2 Astra with 11 months MOT left, it was likely just going to rot on the driveway as it was worth about £100. I lent it to a friend who was desperately in need of transport after his partner had crashed their car.

I lived in Liverpool, he was in Yorkshire, Originally he tried to insure it in his name but was told that as I was the RK I would have to take out the insurance in my name and add my friend as the main driver. I was not asked who the legal owner was. My friend got the train to my place, gave me the money to cover the insurance and drove off in my Astra fully insured and legal. Mr. Yorkshireman was the main driver and the car would be kept overnight in Yorkshire. I was the registered keeper.

The downside is that you are the one who remains responsible for keeping the car taxed and MOTd. How much do you trust your friend?

And potentially could have future loadings if they make a claim

Certainly you can take out a policy on a car which you use but don't own... but can you take out a policy on a car you neither own, use nor have any real connection with? I'd have thought the OP would have difficulty showing that he still had an insurable interest in the car once he'd sold it to his friend.

Cheers All for the constructive responses and the bickering!! :-)

Lum, you pretty much have done what is being considered, and I'd actually trust this friend with my life, this is why I'm willing to try and help reduce his cost, but without breaking the law.

Usual insurance companies have come up on the comparison sites for covering young drivers. Going to give Admiral a call tomorrow and get a deffinative answer from them.

As has been stated I'd help him by letting him use my full NCD, but in a sense (so long as he's claim free) he will also keep my NCD alive.

Will report back tomorrow with outcome from phone call!

    Thanks all again.

    Rob.

Glad you reached a satisfactory conclusion despite the bickering (I'm guilty) The bicker can sometimes be constructive though and sometimes raises points that would otherwise be missed. Good luck.
