Sold item on Amazon - lost in post - RM claim refused

This is the first time I have sold an item and had a problem. The buyer claims it did not arrive, so after enough time passed I refunded and started a claim with royal mail.
RM have got back to me saying that they need my proof of purchase, not the buyer's, and the compensation is the cost price, not the sale price. Seeing as the sale price is what I have actually lost out on, this doesn't seem fair.
The item was a dreamcast game, which I bought about 10 years ago, so I don't have the receipt.
Am I just out of luck on this one? Is there anything I can do?
The irony is that if I could provide the receipt, RM would have to pay out more than if they had accepted my original claim as I paid more than I sold it for.

This is not uncommon on Amazon and often gets reported in the seller boards as an issue. personally I would appeal on the basis you have explained, the cost was more than the current value and assuming you sent in the Amazon details with your claim insist that is the current value.
Alternatively ask on the seller boards and see if they have any more recent views on this.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. They are treating you the same way as a business seller. A reasonable assumption seeing as it's on Amazon. Point out that this was a personal item you sold.0
