Starting a garden in July

Hi

I'm moving house soon and we've got a garden :) (it's been about 4 years since I've had a decent garden, this year just had a small decked yard, enough space to grow a few herbs and some tomatatoes in a pot and nothing else).

It'll be the second week of July before I can do anything with the garden, which isn't very big, and is currently just a square of grass with a path down one side and a patio by the house. I'd like to keep some grass for grazing my bunnies, and make a bed to grow some veg & plants in, and have pots on the patio.

I don't have lots of cash to spend on this, I currently have just a few sorry looking herbs in pots to move with me. I also know that July is a silly time to start a garden really!

What sort of things could I do on the cheap this year? I'd love to grow my own rocket as I love the stuff and it costs a bomb, is July too late to start that? What else could I start in July or later?

I reckon you can grow rocket and other salad leaves and stuff like radish and spring onions, all quick growing , but sometime sgermanation is hampered by really hot weather. Have a go with dwarf french beans and mange tout peas in pots for this year

I was just looking at The Real Seed Catalogue's website and funnily enough their last year's newsletter was all about what to sow in July. They seem like a really genuine, ethical company as well - a good website to browse around, with lots of unusual stuff, and they seem to be getting a lot of good feedback from customers, so I'll be trying some seeds from them next time I need some.
