Wall Boards/Insulation

Hi,
sitting here inside my 1900 terr, single brick walled house - cold ! Looking at next winter now.... Has anyone any experience of fixing wall insulation...? Have seen some. It has a layer of ? polystyrene or foam, then normal plasterboard.. Only saw one thickness (quite thin). How to fix ? Assume I could scrape the wallpapaer off at various points and use the 'dab it' fixing as for plasterboard ?

Dont really want to go down the battens/insulation between, then platerboard over the lot route.
Rooms are only 12 feet wide. Thinking of doing this front and back, 4 rooms in all.
Any tips/advice/experience would be much appreciated. Thanks
