Best flooring for kitchen/diner and sitting area?

We're having a kitchen revamp soon, yay. Now what would be the best flooring? It's a very large area, there's room enough for the kitchen, a dining area and a sitting area with a couple of sofas. I don't want to break the area in two with different floorings as hubby does. But I'd like flooring that lends itself to a country kitchen look, plus appropriate for a sitting room at the end. We like a traditional look, we have terracotta at the moment, but the kids complain that it looks like public toilet, bless. I'm thinking engineered wood but don't know, it has to be warm, man enough to cope with lots of cooking, a dog, a family of six plus homely enough for a seating area and we can chuck a rug on top at that end. I'd like some advice please. Thanks.

  • Engineered wood could work but some (including myself) don't like in kitchen areas because of the risk of water damage.

Another possibility a quality vinyl like Amtico or Karmdean which come in a huge variety of designs.

Personally, in a large all-in-one living room like this I like the floor to be part of the segregation between different zones so I'd go for something like slate tiles in the kitchen (with underfloor heating) and engineered oak in the lounging area.
  • We have had our new kitchen extension and hallway laid with Polyflor which is similar to Karndean but with a slightly thinner wear layer. It's a wood plank style with edging, and grout lines similar to ships planking. In a word, its outstanding - not cheap to lay, but the results are remarkable. Very robust as well.

Although it's 1 area the practical and sensible thing is to split the flooring into suitable surfaces.
Whatever you put down in 1 piece with the exception of some form of slabbed surface, is going to wear out in the wet kitchen area 1st.

My own preference would always be for something scrubable in a food prep area.

Stone tiles in kitchen, solid would flooring in dining area would be to my taste, but you need to please yourself, not me;);)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • Thanks for taking the trouble to reply everyone, will take a look at the suggestions, will google and report back :)
