Chapel/Church Funeral?

Can anyone tell me if there is any reason why you cannot have a Church service but burial in a chapel?

My Dad is buried at a chapel in the next village.

My Mum died Sunday and we wanted the service in the church where she lived but obviously buried with my Dad.

No, chapel is not Catholic, and church is Church of England

I can't see any reason why not. In our family we've done the opposit. Service in non-conformist church/chapel and burial in the parish churchyard. You just need to speak to the vicar and the minister concerned or the undertaker will do it for you.

Should be no problem as long as the land owner agree to the burial.

My Step brothers partner died last year and her service was held at the church where her parents lived and then a commital was had at a different place.

Is there a possibility that the grave your dad is laid to rest in was for only one person and therefore the burial act could be in force to stop further burials in the same yard? It could well be the vicar of the C of E church has old fasioned views that the non conformist (assuming you mean methodist or similar by chapel) church and the C of E should not work together. As others have said I would contact the vicar and preacher and ask why your wishes cannot be carried out. You could if the vicar is the problem contact the bishop for the diocese and ask him to intervene on your behalf also

  • My dad specified a Baptist church funeral but to be buried in the local C of E graveyard, which he had a right to be buried as he lived within the parish boundary.
There was no dificulty with any of this. The undertaker and clergy were incredibly helpful.

Many local graveyards are now closed for new burials except where a plot was purchased prior to closure. You were lucky that yours was not one of them if he wasn't placed in a pre paid plot

  • The churchyard has been extended and is the normal burial ground for local people - room for plenty more yet!
