Dorothy Perkins complaint - jumper tag cut skin

Hi

I bought a jumper from Dorothy Perkins on Monday 7th Jan and wore it later that day. A small corner of the inside neck tag was irritating me a little bit as it was quite sharp but I ignored it as I've had it lots of times before where the tag has made me itchy but I'd just cut it off.

However, the irritation got progressively worse and the tag was scratching my skin but couldn't actually take it off as it was the only top I was wearing and I was at university for hours! :o

I'd been wearing it about three hours by the time I got home and by that time the pain was unbearable. When I took it off and looked at my neck, I had a large red patch across my neck and back and what looked like small white heat/itchy spots. In the middle where the tag had actually been irritating me was an even brighter red patch which was extremely sore to the touch, was burning hot and had a small scratch across it. I put a little clean water on it to see if it would ease the pain/heat spots and it started bleeding from the centre where the scratch was. I can only describe the pain as being like when you burn or scold yourself on something, but slightly worse!

It's been four days since and the patch is still there. The large patch is smaller now and looks like a heat rash but the centre where it had actually been scratched is really scaly and flaking and still feels hot to the touch. When I rub it or touch it hard I still get the worse burning feeling that I got initially on Monday.

I was thinking about making a complaint to head office. It may sound trivial to them but it's been rather painful, particuarly Monday/Tuesday when I couldn't even touch that area of skin and I couldn't even sleep properly because of it (I sleep on my back!). Also, other clothes have been irritating me since and I haven't been able to wear scarves because the knitted material makes it itchy.

I obviously don't want to keep the jumper so was going to return it but was wondering whether head office would, if they do reply to my letter, ask me to forward the jumper onto them so they can have a look? Also, maybe a silly question, but would they ask for a medical note even though I intend to send photos? I haven't been to the doctors about it but would they expect me to have sought medical attention, particularly as it was painful and had been bleeding?

Any other advice would be great :) Thanks.

To avoid irritation from other clothes while it heals, put some antiseptic cream on and a plaster.
You can write to them if you like, but personally, it doesn't seem that big a deal. You could have it the tag of in the loos at uni, or popped a plaster over the tag. Perhaps carry a couple of plasters in future in case something similar happens again.

The reason I didn't cut the tag off is because the irritation was that bad I was contemplating taking the jumper back anyway. I work in retail and I know that some people have been refused a refund because they have 'altered' the clothing by cutting the tag off and therefore is no longer in its original condition. I didn't want to chance it and end up losing £40.

If you work in retail do you not know your consumer rights? If you have the receipt or proof of purchase just take it back and ask for a refund. Dorothy Perkins are part of a chain that usually has no problem with returns. You could have taken the tag off and said you had to remove it as the pain was unbearable. Do you need to take it back, if you just cut the tag out now will the jumper not be ok to wear? :)

I do know my consumer rights but the 28 day refund policy is not an issue at all. I was asking about making a complaint to head office and what they, as a head office not as a store, are likely to say. As I said in my last post, I know quite a few people have been refused refunds because they have altered the state of the clothing and is sometimes seen as not being resaleable. I'm talking from experience and what I have seen first hand.

I must have misunderstood I thought you meant you would complain to head office if you were refused a refund. :)

Why would you contact head office? cut the tag off and keep the jumper or leave it on and return the jumper to the shop.
