Ceiling Repair Costs

Hi

Hope someone can give me some advice re this. I live in a 3 bedroom local authority property with my OH and 3 children. The tenancy is in my name. Unfortunately whilst I was out visiting relatives with my children on friday OH managed to flood the bathroom, we came home to no downstairs lights or electrics and water everywhere!!!! The carpets have now dried out and we thought that no further damage had been done but at about 10pm last night the living room ceiling came down directly underneath the bathroom. I have spoken to my insurers who advised that because I only have contents cover I cannot claim and to the Local Authority who have advised that they will send someone out and that it will be a chargeable job. I wonder if anybody out there could give me some sort of idea about how much repairing the ceiling is likely to cost me and whether or not it is indeed a chargeable job given that surely the LA have buildings insurance cover. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

  • Have a quick check to see if your contents insurance covers you for liabilities to third parties as a result of negligance. I know that some policies include this including my own.

If I accidentally caused a flood and damaged something which did not belong to me, my insurance would cover it.

It may be a long shot but it's worth checking it.
