planning question

about 8 years ago i had a single storey side extension built onto my detached house within permitted development and fully signed off at the time by building control.
3 years (2007) later as family expanded i applied and got planning permission to add a second storey ontop of the side extension previously built. all ok up to now but during the build i instructed the builder to cut in and install a window in the downstairs older extension that faces the road (where there had previously been no window). likewise i had a small window installed where there hadn't been one at the rear of my lounge on the ground floor (not in the extension) that overlooks my detached garage at the rear of the house.
my question is, will these extra windows have infringed any planning laws. no neighbours have ever questioned or complained about them but could there ever be a future problem if i wanted to sell the property at some time in the future?
the building works for both extensions have all been signed off by building control at the relevant times.

  • If they are not protuding in any way then I would of thought not. Issues that I have come across over the years, have been about dorma windows in a roof - the ones that stick out - not the flat ones - porches over a certain size and some conservatories over a certain size. Why not just ring the local council building dept up and ask.

    thanks for reply.
i had considered doing that but didn't want to open a can of worms if i had indeed done something wrong that may not be counted after a set period of time so to speak.
they are single flat windows and not large by any stretch of the imagination.

You did these windows five years ago? That's outside the 4 years you'd need to get away with building something without planning permission. I wouldn't go looking for trouble by asking the planners but should it be necessary to prove you built these five years ago you'd be OK.

    Many thanks for that reassurance.

Actually, it's 10 years if it breaches a condition on any previous planning permission.
