We save our loose change & buy Tesco/ morrisons saving stamps with it every week. We had £150 this year, enough for the Christmas shopping. You usually get a bonus as well after collecting so many.

Am I the only one who finds counting the pennies into bank coin bags therapeutic? Or is that just the scrooge in me! :xmassmile

I enjoy it too. Got a huge bottle that we put them into and count a couple of times a year. Also raid it for change when needed.

I have a pewter teapot that I throw all the copper in - my MIL used to have it and she used to do exactly the same and then let our two boys spend the contents when they visited her. Currently I just bag and save when it gets full, but as DGD gets older I may let her spend the proceeds as her Dad used to!
I also save £2 coins , although from time to time they are used to bale me out, and also 5p pieces.
Must be my eyesight, as I rarely notice coins on the pavement - but I'd pick them up if I did!
    Resolution:
    Think twice before spending anything!
  • My OH is terrible for emptying his pockets and dumping out anything less than 10p. I find money in his sock drawer, kitchen drawer, utility drawer...you get the picture!

I collected it all up and currently he has £69 waiting to go to the bank. I told him that anything that didn't make a complete bag was going into a charity pot which I did (there was £4something in the end).

I do this too. It really does mount up. All 1p, 2p, 5p 10p, 20p and 50p coins go into the money box. I also save £2 coins. I love counting it all out and putting it into bags!

Many years ago I collected sixpences - anyone remember those? - and it paid for my first holiday abroad. I think it cost £40 for a coach trip around Europe!!

Oh dear - I am old!!!!

OK. I'm going back to the dark ages now. I had a bedsit before I was married which had a picture rail all round it. I used to perch old threepenny pieces on it, (remember them? with the nice straight sides). I think in the time I was there I got all round the room twice. The proceeds went into my PO Savings book and paid for my wedding dress, veil, headdress and shoes. Saving isn't that much fun these days.

I have a tin in which I put my 'road kill' pennies money I have found on the pvement which has been dropped or thrown away .Yes I know it sounds daft but you would be suprised how many folk throw pennies two pennies or even five pennies away ,especially outside a newsagents .I am happy to pick them up and put in my tin at home I change them up just before my family holiday in August and it pays for ice creams for my grandchildren At the moment I have around £9+ in my tin since last August.School children tend to throw copper coins away more than anyone else for some reason.:):)

I have noticed that - my daughter seems to think that anything under a 50p is not actually legal tender - I'm always finding coppers and silver lying about in her bedroom. I will be really cross if I thought she was chucking money away. Mind you, she does papers on Sundays and is always picking money up outside the chip shop/kebab place in the village (work that one out if you will!)

We have a sweet shop near our house, there's always 1ps and 2ps on the pavement outside from the schoolkids. I pick them up and put them in a big jar just inside the front door and when it's full I take it to the local cat rescue. The kids "gave" the rescue about £30 last year. It soon adds up!

I save my 20ps in a pig and 5ps in an old change purse. I like jumble sales and you always need a lot of change to take with you.

No I like to count out all the change and bag it up, I find it strangely therapeutic. The GF thinks I'm a little odd for it though.

  • If any of you bank with HSBC you should check in your local branch - a lot of the larger ones now have paying in machines for coins, it counts up the coins for you and pays it straight into your account with no charge.
I switched to Lloyds almost a year ago, but I have kept my HSBC account open just so I can use the change machine! (I have a small self employed business and after I do a craft market, it's so much easier to just dump all my change into the machine!)
the only debt left now is on credit cards! The evil loan has gone!! :j:j
