Save the Pennies

Just sat and counted out my change jar, and I have over £145 in coins. Managed to do this since september just by not buying my usual junk and putting the newspaper money in the jar too. (can get all the news online now).

I am hoping to use this for January and have an otherwise money free month. I think this will pay for my petrol costs and may be paying some visits to friends and family at meal times.

Has anyone else tried this and any tips on money free months.

Yes, I save coins in a money box. Always comes in useful at the time.

Tips on money free months? saving stamps at supermarkets are coming in very useful this week ;) just used for normal shopping plus a few extra's.

I do the same again after Christmas and spend them a couple of weeks before we go on holiday in the summer, which adds to our spending money.

I have a tin in which I put my 'road kill' pennies money I have found on the pvement which has been dropped or thrown away .Yes I know it sounds daft but you would be suprised how many folk throw pennies two pennies or even five pennies away ,especially outside a newsagents .I am happy to pick them up and put in my tin at home I change them up just before my family holiday in August and it pays for ice creams for my grandchildren At the moment I have around £9+ in my tin since last August.School children tend to throw copper coins away more than anyone else for some reason.:):)

To avoid having to spend ages counting out exact amounts for bank coin bags, or being charged a % by coinstar machines, I just chuck handfuls of coins into the coin funnel bit of the self service tills at T*sco (many other supermarkets have a slot you have to feed them into which takes ages) to pay for everyday shopping. Sometimes you put too many in at once, and the machine takes a moment to clear the backlog while spitting out the extras into the change tray - just scoop them up and pop them back in when it's done churning through the ones in the mechanism - a little light comes on when it's ready. If you don't have enough coins to pay for the full shop, you can always pay the remainder on a card.
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

It's amazing how it mounts up.

I remember saving all the 50p pieces that came my way, and after a few months had enough to buy the new duvet that I needed.

I have a 'coppers' jug and a 'silver' jar. the coppers jug came in handy when DD and the kids went to holiday park where I knew the kids would spend a lot of coppers in the 'amusment arcade'. my jug netted them £14 odd each - which was £2 a day! a sum my DD declared 'quite enough'!
my silver jar comes in handy for when I have to use the bus and not sure I will have the right money, or for carol singers and each year I will get about £80 out of it! even if it is 'dipped into' now and again.
  • I have a small money box for high value change (20p and 50p) which gets raided fairly frequently (I'm self employed and rely on that loose change to get me through slow weeks). I have two other large tubs that I use for smaller silver coins and coppers. They get filled throughout the year and then converted to "real money" to spend on holiday.

The first time I emptied those jars the total was over £200, and that wasn't a full year, so I have high hopes for next time.

  • I have had a penny jar for years, I just chuck all the shrapnel that is left in my purse at the end of the week and DH throws his loose change in as well, plus any coins found in the street. We have done this for most of our married life and it has got us out the mire more times than I care to count.
We also have a freezer full of food and a full larder plus extras such as toilet rolls, cleaning stuff, shampoo etc that helps out with months that are tight.
We are planning on opening up the fireplace in the front room and having a wood burning stove put as soon as we can, to try to save on heating bills
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Thank you Babyshoes. I have a coppers tub and one for five pences, which does not get very full for some reason. Last time I emptied the tub there was about £10, but the charge from coinstar upset me. I have just emptied it again and was wondering what I would do with it. Grocery shop at Tesco it is.

Am I the only one who finds counting the pennies into bank coin bags therapeutic? Or is that just the scrooge in me! :xmassmile
