Parcel heavier than expected - Courier

Hi! I wasn't sure where to ask this, I'm guessing people in this part of the forum know about sending parcels!
I am sending a parcel to France from Northern Ireland, it's being collected tomorrow. I booked with the correct dimensions, however I have no idea if the weight is right. I chose 10kg as it seemed plenty, but now I'm worried it's actually heavier (might not be, I don't know).
My scales are broken, so I can't weigh the box.
What I would like to know is what happens if the parcel exceeds 10kg in weight? Does the person who collects it from me weigh it on the spot and so could always remove some stuff from it, or do they only weigh it at the time of shipping?
If the latter, and it's more than 10kg, how much is the extra charge likely to be? Do they charge per kilo extra, like airlines do? I paid £23 with Parcel2go. Thanks!

It depends on the courier and the service you've paid for.
It may be that you've paid for up to 20kg or 30kg. If you've only paid for up to 10kg and it is over you may have to pay a surcharge and possibly penalties.
Check who the courier is and the service you've bought.
If you can't find that info, try adding 1kg, 5kg and 10kg to the Parcel2Go pages and see if the price alters. Any difference could be the minimum.
If you have only paid for 10kg, you may get lucky and have a courier that doesn't check all the weights. I think most do now, especially on international transactions..0 -
Thank you! It's ParcelForce Euro Priority. I just checked and the price I paid seems to be for 15kg, as when I put in 10kg it was cheaper....
But...I only just noticed that I could have chosen Northern Ireland in the drop-down menu...I didn't, I left it as United Kingdom (well, it is!). Worried about THAT now!0 -
If you're sending it to France I doubt that being in N. Ireland would make a difference between here and the UK. There is a difference in their pricing for sending in N. Ireland and to rest of UK.Thank you! It's ParcelForce Euro Priority. I just checked and the price I paid seems to be for 15kg, as when I put in 10kg it was cheaper....

If it's Parcelforce and 15kg service they will likely only check it doesn't go over 15kg. I'm basing that on using Parcelforce for domestic services, but I doubt it's different for Europe..0 -
Can you weigh it using bathroom scales? Weight yourself holding the parcel and then deduct your weight.0

It's my bathroom scales that are broken.

My parcel was collected today as planned. I asked him if he thought it was more than 10kg, he lifted it and he said "nah, you're alright!". So hopefully that'll be fine!
Now fingers and toes crossed it arrives before the 25th as it's full of my Christmas presents to my family! Thanks for your help.
