What are our rights?

We ordered a wardrobe to be made and then fitted in to our bedroom. (Ordered in April to be fitted end of September).

On the first day of fitting we were told that one of the doors wasn't cut correctly (we have a sloping roof) and would need to be send back to the factory.

On new date for fitting of replacement we were then told that the glass panel across the middle had shattered and therefore once again needed to be replaced by the factory.

We were then told (after me chasing them) that the replacement glass panel was not correct as it was a different thickness to the door.

After some chasing it turns out that the doors are now made to a different thickness (they are now thicker) and all three doors for the wardrobe will have to be remade.

We now come to the fact that they will now have to replace all the tracks for the doors as the new ones are too wide.

They have offered us £100 goodwill - we actually had a letter saying that this would be full and final settlement. My husband has spoken to them and they have said thats its not full & final settlement.

We are 3 months on, our wardrobe is not finished and we're still at least another month from completion.

What are our rights in this matter. They messed up with their drawings in the first place and have subsequently changed their product from initial fitting. What form of compensation can we expect, if any?

Thanks in advance.

  • We've paid most of it about (£3500) but we are still outstanding £700 which is due upon completion.
  • I think the important thing is to get the wardrobes made and installed to your satisfaction. As I read it the doors have to go away and be re-made and the track has all got to be removed and replaced with wider. Basically it all scrap. I think a letter to the manufacturer offering the option of refunding all your monies and going away in disgrace or getting it sorted within 2 weeks or you go to the court and get a specific perfomance order against them.
Argue about the monies when you are happy with it , but keep a detailed record of all the events and delays with the times.
